Youths to tackle global hunger issues in 30-hour fasting experiential learning journey
27 March 2024 - Calling all young changemakers 13 years and above! World Vision Singapore's annual 30 Hour Famine returns on 18 and 19 May 2024, at Fort Canning Park. This year's transformative event, themed "Hunger Trials," is an immersive experience aimed to raise awareness about the challenging realities faced by vulnerable children battling hunger and poverty due to conflict and climate disasters.
More than just fasting: Participants will embark on an experiential journey centered on understanding and addressing global hunger issues. They'll walk in the shoes of children in hunger-stricken areas through interactive challenges, including an obstacle course simulating displacement and an escape game highlighting World Vision's vital intervention programmes.
Learning from the experts: Youths will also gain firsthand knowledge from Dr. Kyi Minn, National Director of World Vision Myanmar, who will share his experience as a frontline humanitarian personnel, and hone photojournalistic skills with Ms. How Hwee Young, Asia Pacific Regional Chief at the European Pressphoto Agency. They will learn to tell powerful visual stories advocating change. The event culminates with Ms. Lam Bao Yan, co-founder of LoveOnUkraine and Director of Genesis Architects, sharing her experience supporting families in conflict zones, to inspire youth to become the change they want to see.
Says Mr Benjamin Tan, CEO of World Vision Singapore: "30 Hour Famine is not just about fasting; it's about fostering empathy, compassion, and social justice among our youth. Through this event, we aim to encourage volunteerism, enhance regional literacy, and empower youths to advocate for a hunger-free world."
Making a Difference: The 30 Hour Famine is about creating lasting change. Registration proceeds will support World Vision Singapore's Global Hunger Response, impacting communities in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, and Rakhine, Myanmar. Over 30,000 people, including 21,000 children, will benefit from school meals, life-saving medicines, and food security initiatives.
Why It Matters: The world is facing an unprecedented hunger crisis. With over 25 million children at risk of starvation, and 149 million suffering from stunting due to malnutrition, the need for action is critical. This experiential learning journey empowers youth to understand the urgency and become advocates for a more equitable future. 30 Hour Famine is an opportunity to cultivate empathy, compassion, and social justice values. Singapore's youth will gain crucial knowledge about regional issues and develop a passion for volunteerism.
