East Afghanistan Earthquake Response

Two major earthquakes of magnitude 6.0 and 5.2 struck eastern Afghanistan on 31 August. Another two powerful aftershocks struck the same area on 5 September deepening the devastation of the earthquake as rescuers struggle to reach remote villages that have been totally flattened by the disaster. The rough terrain, ongoing landslides make rescue efforts even more challenging. The human cost continues to rise: over 2,200 people killed and more than 3,600 injured. Families who lost their homes are now sleeping under cloth or in the open. World Vision has launched a partnership response through Afghan national organisations the Afghan Women’s Educational Centre (AWEC) and the Agency for Assistance and Development in Afghanistan (AADA), focusing on the provision of healthcare, food, emergency shelter and clean water. Access to healthcare and clean water was already limited before the earthquake. A disaster of this scale exacerbates existing vulnerabilities and deepens humanitarian need.
