Will I ever become a doctor?

Pathias Haamumba is a 12-year-old boy living in Zambia, under World Vision’s Sinazongwe Area Development Programme. Every day after his classes, Pathias eagerly picks up his bicycle and heads home. He quipps, “ If my sponsor did not buy this bicycle for me, I would have stopped going to school because I feel very tired and weak every time I walk the long distance to school.”

Pathias loves reading the Bible and singing hymns. His favorite scripture in the Bible is Ezekiel 37:2-14. “God has the power,” Pathias shares, “He will raise our bones one day and live again with him where there is no suffering.”

Pathias' happy facade belies his health condition: He is HIV-positive and so are his mother and sister. World Vision has placed both Pathias and his mother on Anti-Retroviral Treatment (ART), but his sister is not as her CD4 count (percentage of white blood cells that are attacked by the HIV virus) is still dangerously high and being observed. 

Pathias does not allow his HIV status to limit his dreama and ability to live like any other child. In fact, he is jovial and full of hope—and has a dream he is working hard towards.

"I want to be a doctor who will be able to pay attention to patients."
