FAQs

How was the idea of Beyond Borders initiated?

P&G was seeking a long-term community program that fulfilled its global corporate philanthropic mission to improve the lives of communities in which it operates. The idea of Beyond Borders was born after tremendous research dedicated to finding the right partners and platforms to help children in Singapore and throughout Asia live, learn and thrive from this program.

Partnering World Vision gives P&G the unique opportunity to reach needy communities in the region through its wide geographical reach. And partnering Singapore schools, especially schools like Nan Chiau that are so supportive, help to strengthen the program tremendously.

What are the mechanics of the Beyond Borders program?

There are several key elements of the program.

First, the effort to build the social consciousness of Singaporean children through an intensive roadshow that will run from August to November, and which P&G and World Vision hope will continue in the years to come.

Second, to provide both monetary and hands-on support to help needy children in Asia live a better life.  This support will come from both the efforts of Singaporean school children as well as P&G employees here.

P&G employees will be able to contribute in four ways. Firstly, employee volunteers will be making their rounds during the school roadshow to support the school talks.  Secondly, they will contribute used papers and old clothing to generate funds for the program. The money from this element not only directly benefits the sponsored child, but also his or her community. Thirdly, they will be encouraged to support World Vision's "Sponsor-a-child" program.  The fourth area is for employee volunteers to travel up to any of area development programs that Beyond Borders supports and to help build facilities like schools and shelters.

How many children does the program support?

Beyond Borders supports 72,000 children in Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Laos, Cambodia and Myanmar.

Will any of the funds be channelled to needy communities in Singapore?

For now, the intent of Beyond Borders within the Singapore environment is to help Singaporean children thrive by instilling in them a social consciousness that goes beyond borders. The intention of Beyond Borders in Singapore is to help Singaporean children thrive by instilling in them a social consciousness that goes beyond borders.

Is this program a once-off? How long do you intend for it to run?

No, Beyond Borders is intended as a long-term commitment from P&G and our employees to help children in Asia live, learn and thrive.  We hope to continue working with schools in Singapore from year to year and for P&G employees to continue to contribute to the program in a variety of ways.
